ESL Classes at Cape Fear CC Help Leidy Ward Carreno Grow Her Business and Confidence

Originally from Colombia, Leidy Ward Carreno enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Cape Fear Community College to strengthen her communication skills and create new opportunities for herself and her family.

Carreno and her husband, a retired member of the military, own Takin It Light Photography, a family-owned and veteran-operated photography business.

Over the years of traveling together, the couple discovered a passion for photographing nature, landscapes, and sports, and eventually turned that passion into a business.

While her husband focuses on taking photos, Carreno helps grow the business behind the scenes by communicating with clients and supporting the business’s day-to-day operations

Gaining Confidence in English

Carreno decided to attend CFCC to improve her English skills for the workplace and everyday communication while continuing to build the family business.

“So far, I have learned more English vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation,” she said. “I am also improving my listening skills and speaking.”

Her progress and dedication were recently recognized at CFCC’s annual student recognition ceremony, where she was honored for outstanding achievement in English as a Second Language.
“Studying ESL at CFCC has helped me feel more confident communicating in English every day.”
Growing the family business

Looking ahead, Carreno plans to continue improving her English while growing Takin It Light Photography with her husband. She is also interested in studying graphic design at CFCC to help expand the business and strengthen its creative services.
“My goal is to continue studying, working hard, and growing my small business little by little,” she said.
