Gracie Jackson began her education during segregation while attending Mt. View High School in Marion, North Carolina. Born in 1944, she left school during her senior year after becoming pregnant and following the loss of her mother.
More than six decades later, Jackson returned to complete her education and achieve a lifelong goal.
During recovery from a serious health crisis in 2025, she decided it was time to finish her diploma. With support from family and staff at McDowell Technical Community College, she re‑enrolled through the Adult High School program.
After reviewing her previous credits, the college determined she needed only two courses—Health/PE and Personal Finance—to graduate. At 81 years old, Jackson successfully completed both courses and earned her North Carolina high school diploma.
Her story demonstrates that education truly has no expiration date.
